The outside is the cuticle, a layer of overlapping scales, a bit like tiles on a roof. The inside is the cortex, the core of the strand. Your curl pattern is set inside the cortex. Nothing else decides it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrizz is a cuticle problem. When those scales are raised and rough, strands catch on each other, light scatters instead of reflecting evenly, and humidity has an easy way in. Flat, sealed scales look smooth and behave smooth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA salon keratin treatment does not work on the cuticle. It works past it. It is a chemical process sealed into the strand under a flat iron at around 450 degrees Fahrenheit. That is why the result is so smooth, and it is also why you cannot change your mind about it on a Tuesday. It costs roughly $150 to $500, it takes hours in a chair, and it is usually repeated about three times a year. You are not smoothing your hair.
