Walk into most salons with frizzy hair and the answer is a keratin treatment. Smooth hair, yes. But the price of that smooth is your curl pattern. Ellerand exists because that trade is not necessary, and because almost nobody stops to explain why.

What a keratin treatment actually is

Start with the parts most people already know. A salon keratin treatment runs roughly $150 to $500 depending on the salon and the length of your hair. It takes hours in the chair. It is usually repeated about three times a year, which makes it a standing bill rather than a single purchase.

Now the part that rarely leads the conversation.

Your hair has an outside and an inside. The outside is the cuticle, a layer of overlapping scales that lie flat when hair looks smooth and lift when it does not. The inside is the cortex, and the cortex is what holds your curl pattern in place. A keratin treatment is a chemical process worked into the hair and then sealed in with a flat iron at around 450 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat is not the finishing touch. The heat is the mechanism, and the mechanism works past the cuticle.

That is also the part you cannot take back on your own schedule. There is no rinsing it out on a Tuesday because you changed your mind. You wait, and you grow it out. That is why the decision sits heavier than the price tag.

Frizz is a cuticle problem, not a cortex problem

Put those two facts side by side and something obvious falls out.

Your curl pattern lives in the cortex. Your frizz lives on the cuticle. Frizz is what you see when those surface scales are lifted. The strand takes on moisture from the air unevenly, single hairs swell and separate from the group, and they stand away from the rest instead of lying with them.

So a keratin treatment goes past the cuticle because that is the only way to deliver straight. If straight is not what you asked for, there was never a reason to go in there at all. You do not have to change the inside of the hair to smooth the outside of it.

What Ellerand is

The Ellerand Curl-Safe Smoothing System is three steps, and all three of them work on the surface. A 250ml shampoo, a 250ml mask, and a 100ml leave in serum. Wash, mask, serum.

Five actives do the work, and every one of them is a surface agent:

  • Omega 3-6-8-9
  • Phytosqualane

  • Smoothing Silicone Blend

They seal and smooth the cuticle. None of them reaches the cortex, which means the system physically cannot change your curl pattern. That is not a promise we are making about how careful we are. It is a description of where the ingredients are.

The smoothing silicone blend is worth naming on its own, because it is the clearest example of the whole idea. A smoothing silicone blend is a surface agent. It lies along the outside of the strand, lays the cuticle down, and stays there. Staying on the surface is the reason your pattern is safe. An ingredient that never gets past the cuticle cannot reach the cortex where your curl is held, so it cannot move it. We name it because it is the mechanism, and the mechanism is the argument.

Working on the surface has consequences, and they are all in your favor. No formaldehyde. No bond breaking chemistry. No flat iron. You do not need heat to get the result here, because heat is what the other method needs, not this one.

It works on every pattern

The cuticle is the same structure on every head of hair. Straight, wavy, curly, coily, 4c: the scales are built the same way and they lift for the same reasons. A system that works on the cuticle works on all of them. There is no pattern it fails on, and you will not find a chart on this site telling you which hair we accept. The only thing that changes from one head of hair to the next is how much product you pour, which is a question of length and volume, not of whether it works.

What we will not tell you

  • We will not tell you it is permanent. It is not. It works while you use it. We chose that on purpose, because permanent is the exact thing that takes the choice away from you.
  • We will not tell you it straightens hair. It does not. If straight is genuinely what you want, a keratin treatment is the honest answer, and we would rather say so than sell you the wrong thing.
