What Is Inside

Every active in this formula works on the outside of the hair. That is deliberate, and it is the single idea that holds the whole product together.

A strand of hair has an outer layer, the cuticle, and an inner core, the cortex. Frizz lives on the cuticle. Your curl pattern lives in the cortex. Anything that changes your curl pattern has to get past the cuticle and into the cortex. That is where a salon keratin treatment works, with chemistry sealed in under a flat iron at around 450 degrees Fahrenheit, and it is why you cannot simply wash it back out.

Nothing in Ellerand goes there. All five actives sit on the surface and do their work on the surface. They seal and smooth the cuticle. They do not reach the cortex. So the smoothing is real and your pattern stays, not because we are being careful with it, but because there is no route by which it could be changed.

The five actives

Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3, and it is probably familiar to you from skincare. Here it is doing a surface job. It conditions the outer layer of the strand so it feels even under your fingers rather than rough and catchy. An even surface also reflects light more consistently, and that is a large part of why smooth hair reads as smooth from across a room.

Omega 3-6-8-9

These are fatty acids, the same family of oils used to soften and condition across cosmetics. On hair they coat and soften the cuticle so the raised scales relax down against the strand instead of standing away from it. Softer scales also mean less friction between strands, and less friction means less of the everyday roughing up that creates frizz in the first place.

Phytosqualane

Phytosqualane is a light emollient. Weight matters a great deal on hair, because heavy oils pull curls into strings and flatten volume, and this one is thin rather than greasy. What it adds is slip. Strands separate cleanly, a comb moves through with less pulling, and hair sits next to itself without snagging.

Carbohydrate Complex

Sugars are very good at holding on to water. This is a blend of sugar based conditioning agents that keep water at the surface of the hair rather than letting the outer layer dry out and roughen. Dry hair pulls moisture out of humid air, and that exchange is the moment frizz usually shows up. Hair that already has water held at the surface has less reason to go looking for it.

Smoothing Silicone Blend

This is the sealing step, and it is the one that closes the cuticle. The blend forms a thin, even layer over the outside of the strand, which is what actually flattens the surface and keeps humidity from getting at it. It is a surface agent in the most literal sense. It lies on top of the hair, and it has no way into the cortex.

Why the smoothing blend works on the surface

The smoothing blend is a surface agent, and that is exactly why your curl pattern is safe.

Think about what you are asking for. You want the frizz gone and the curls kept. That means you need something that changes the outside of the hair and cannot change the inside. A surface agent is the only kind of ingredient that fits that description. The other option is an ingredient that reaches past the cuticle into the cortex, and that is the chemistry in the salon treatment that runs roughly $150 to $500, takes hours in a chair, gets repeated about three times a year, and works on your curl pattern rather than on your frizz.

So the blend goes on the surface, it works on the surface, and it comes off the surface with your next wash. That is also why the result is not permanent. We would rather you wash it in again than have your pattern rewritten for you.

Why all five, and not one hero ingredient

Smoothing the outside of a hair is not one job. Something has to soften the cuticle, something has to add slip so strands stop catching, something has to hold water at the surface, and something has to close the whole thing off. Each of these five does one of those things. Together they are what turns a rough, raised surface into a flat one, which is all frizz control has ever been.

All hair types

The cuticle is the same structure on straight, wavy, curly and coily hair, including 4c. Surface work behaves the same way on all of it, so there is no pattern these five actives are wrong for. What changes from head to head is how much mask and how much serum you want, which is a matter of how much you use rather than of texture.
